Error 0x80070057 returned from call to Adding routers IP address

If you have an HP ML350 G5 and use the SmartStart disk to install SBS 2003 R2 and you get this error when you run the CEICW (Connect to the Internet Wizard), check this location in the Registry, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\ZoneMap.

If the ZoneMap key is not under InternetSettings, add it. It seems that the HP SmartStart cd removes this key and it is needed when you run the wizard because it adds entries into the IE security zones. It is also setting the "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" checkbox on the local intranet zone.

Cannot Access CompanyWeb After Installing 948110

If you're like me and have suffered with your SBS Sharepoint Companyweb not working after the 948110 SQL update, take a look at this as a possible solutions.

My customer had SBS 2003 R2 Premium with SQL 2005 installed but we never upgraded the Sharepoint from MSDE. The update that was installed broke my customers site, like so many others. All the info I read on the web and at the SBS Blogs said to "Perform the upgrade again to SQL Server 2000..." so instead of going through all that, I figured I would just upgrade the MSDE to SQL 2005 for Sharepoint. Thanks to the wonderful M&M's for publishing this article on how to upgrade Sharepoint to SQL 2005. It worked like a charm and I am now able to get back to my companyweb.

Smart Phone's not syncing? Activesync Support Code: 0x85010005

If you ever have a Windows Smart Phone stop syncing all of a sudden, here is something you might want to look in to.

I have a customer that uses smart phones on Verizon and syncs wirelessly to their SBS Exchange using OMA. Two days ago it stopped working out of the blue. What was weird was they have multiple phones and some worked and some didn't. There was no explanation. There were no updates or applications installed on the server for a few weeks. The ones that did not work would time out with a 0x85010005 error. After many hours of research and not finding any good information I decided to call Microsoft Support.

A few more hours later we finally figured it out. For some reason there was a service that was installed at some point called FAMv4 which was a FAMv4 mini-filter driver. It is a part of the ScriptLogic FileSystem Auditor Service. The support rep said there had been many calls with the same issue and they had found that this service was blocking http requests on the server. The key is located at HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/FAMv4. The entry you want to change is Start. The default value is 1. If you change it to 4, it will turn off the filter. Once that is done, reboot.

Seems the filter was blocking our phone connections to the OMA. Why it started all of a sudden I will never know.

I searched Microsoft's Support site and found no KB about this, so I hope anyone that has this issue happen can benefit from the many hours I spent on the phone.

Preplogic's LearnSmart Video Training

In the past I have relied on Sybex books and Exam Cram's to study for a Microsoft test. The next test I am taking is 70-290 and for this one I decided to try a CBT from Preplogic. So far I find it very helpful and worth every penny.

I also take practice tests from Transcender and feel that with the CBT and the practice test I will be able to pass with no problem. I guess we will find out next week and I will let you know how it goes.

Untangle - The Open Source Network Gateway

I recently attended a Webcast hosted by Harry Brelsford at SMBNation.com about a new and upcoming company called Untangle. The basis of this webinar was the fact that the new SBS 2008 will not have this ISA server included in the suite. Instead, users will have to have a hardware firewall or a separate ISA server in the network whereas before it was an "all-in-one".

Untangle states their applications are a "Commercial-grade open source alternative to SonicWALL and WatchGuard" that does Content, Spyware, Virus and Malware filtering, all for FREE.

At first, I was skeptical. What? A non Microsoft product in my SBS network? Never happen. Well, I decided I was being a little to pig headed and set out to try it in my own home network before I said anything negative. Needless to say I was impressed right out of the box. The install was simple. In an hour I had downloaded the 450 meg .iso, burnt it to a disk, installed and configured it on a spare server I had lying around.

It works.

Web threats are ever changing. In years past we had to worry about being hacked from the outside by a virus coming into the network from an infected PC or server on the Internet, hence the need for ISA. Now, we have to worry about users infecting us from the inside out. Content filtering is a big need in most networks since Social Engineering problems have increased. At least 75% of my customers have had this issue because of a user getting infected with Spyware or a Virus by downloading that free screen saver they wanted, or clicking on that popup that says your PC has been infected by Spyware.

Not anymore. The Untangle server is a solution to your problems. Don't believe me? Load up a box and drop it in your network in Transparent Bridge mode and turn on the monitoring feature. In a week I guarantee you will be amazed at what your users are doing.

Working hard to keep you happy...

As we progress into Web 2.0, blogging has taken off with leaps and bounds. Practically anyone that is a "techie", no not a "Trekkie", has a blog and writes in it from time to time. 5 years ago forums were the popular item. They still are, but blogging has expanded that idea into the next century.

Collaboration. That's what's it all about. It is the new buzz word and I have been hearing more of this word lately and more and more companies want to be a part of it. Basically, it is communication, making decisions about something of importance, an idea, etc. Web 2.0 makes collaboration easier because of the way communication is interactive. Web sites that have static images and text are boring. People want to be able to interact with the site, it makes them feel as if they are part of the "big picture". And really, when you think about it, they do become the picture because they contribute to ideas.

Take wikipedia for example. Some of you have probably never heard of it. It is another Web 2.0 idea. People can go to this site and contribute to definitions and ideas. Just like an Encyclopedia has information on a subject, Wikipedia has information on any subject and is constantly growing, but with one major difference. It is not just the ideas or information on one person, company, or group, rather it is a collection of ideas from anyone who wants to contribute to it and that can support it with a fact or experience.

What's the whole point? I have no idea. That's fun of Blogging.

Now this is what I am talking about!

It seems that solid state drives are going to be the direction pc makers will go pretty soon. Samsung just announced here that it will be shipping a 64 gig hard drive as a direct replacement for a traditional hard drive. Below is a quote from the article at Infoworld.

"Solid-state disk drives are intended as replacements for conventional hard-disk drives and use NAND flash memory rather than a rotating magnetic storage disk. They offer several benefits including faster data read and write times, greater shock resistance, and lower power consumption but are also more expensive. "

This means that once they hammer out the kinks, people like me will be freed from replacing and reloading "dead" hard drives. It also means less power consumption, less heat dissipation, and faster read/write times.

I can't wait.

Event 537 in SBS 2003

I decided to battle a few lingering problems with one of my SBS 2003 servers today and thought I might share with you my results. One of the symptoms was a very high number, over 25,000 to be exact, of Event 537 in the Security log. The exact error I got was below:

This was weird to me since it did not show any other info other than the username and domain. After reading a few articles online, I came across this one that stated to check to see if there were any HP printer management packages installed on the pc. I thought how odd because most of the errors I was reading about said to check the net time, but I checked it out on the machine that user was logged into and sure enough there was an HP Document management tool running in the tray. Turns out it was for a printer that was no longer in service. It seems this issue can be caused if there are applications from client computers trying to logon by incorrect accounts and password. So I removed the application and rebooted the pc and so far there are no more events in the Security log.

WSUS on SBS 2003

For those of you who don't know what WSUS is, it stands for Windows Server Update Services. In a network where you have a lot of pc's, this makes Microsoft Updates easier and faster especially when you have 25 pc's downloading the same update 25 different times. The updates are syncronized with a WSUS server and distributed from there. When Automatic Update runs on the clients, a GPO tells them to use the local WSUS server instead of downloading from the web.

I took a look at this package about 2 years ago but at that time the company I worked for was using a workgroup so I could not use the software the way it was designed. Today I will be using a Microsoft article to setup WSUS on an SBS 2003 server, which I will post a link to here for you to see.

SUS which is WSUS's predecessor will not be supported by Microsoft after July 10, 2007 so if you are using this technology, you will want to upgrade to the latest. By then WSUS 3.0 will be released and will support an even broader range of products.

Be sure to check the basics first

Let me explain. One of my customers experienced a loss of emails coming into their network yesterday. I started with the normal checking, making sure services were running, drive space, etc. The error that people emailing them were getting was an NDR saying Unknown User.

After a few hours of troubleshooting and removing email filters and such, my boss and senior engineer found a problem with the mx record in dns. It seems that the local ISP that hosts the web site for this company had a system wide problem yesterday with changes made to the mx records of all their customers' domains. This meant that everyone that was sending mail to this domain wasn't even getting to the server.

Seems they forgot to let us know about this outage.

So next time a hard problem comes up that you can't figure out, be sure to check all your basics because it may be staring you in the face like it was for me the whole time.

Prepare your SBS domain for an additional R2 Domain Controller

I came across this article the other day and found it an interesting read. It's called, "How to prepare the SBS domain for an additional R2 Domain Controller". It walks you through how to upgrade the Active Directory Schema on an SBS server to R2 if you purchase a new member server preloaded. Basically it uses the disk from the Server 2003 R2 set and runs the adprep tool from within it. After that you can insert additional domain controllers that are Server 2003 R2 into any SBS network. SBS 2003 R2: Vista and Office 2007 compatibility update

An update will be sent through the Microsoft Update to Windows SBS 2003 with SP1 and Windows SBS 2003 R2 customers in the March timeframe. If you need the update before then, it can also be downloaded. For more information on how to download, please read the Vista and Office 2007 FAQs.

The download will be available as of February 9th in the English, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Dutch, French,German,Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Czech, Hungarian, Portuguese, Turkish, and Greek.

I'm back

The last time I posted in this blog was in the beta days, man things have changed. I am still here, alive and in one piece. I am liking the new version being integrated with gmail. Since I had a gmail account already, I was able to upgrade smoothly. Google will rule the world someday.

Anyway, from this point on my blog will be used for posting general updates about myself and technical information on products I work with in my day to day job as a field technician in the I.T. field.

First Post

Welcome to my blog. Just set it up and I will be posting more in the near future. Never really had the time to blog before, tried it on Myspace but that site always seem to be down. At work I am always out working with customers and when I get home, it's my son's time, have to make dinner, go to t-ball practice, ride bikes, play cars, wash clothes, or something along those lines.

Bottom line is, I like the idea of blogging, so hang in there. Thanks for visiting.
